An Oval Baby Crib on Wheels: Eight Mattress Heights, Quiet Casters and Three Stages

Nov 05, 2026

A crib has to be many things at once: a safe place to sleep, a piece of furniture that suits the room, and something a parent can actually live with at three in the morning. Our new oval baby crib is designed around that last point. It has no square corners to bump into, it rolls from room to room on quiet, lockable casters, and it changes its job as the baby grows, from a bedside crib for the first months to a toddler bed and then a kids bed.

The frame is European beech, and the curved ends are covered with soft fabric panels in three colorways: Warm White, Cherry and Blueberry. This post goes through the details one at a time, with measurements wherever we have them: the shape, the wood, the safety details, the three stages, the eight mattress heights, the wheels, and how the crib moves around a home.

An oval shape with soft fabric ends

The oval outline is the first thing people notice, and it is more than a style choice. With no square corners, the crib has nothing sharp at the height of a baby's reach, and the curved rails run smoothly around both ends. Those ends are covered with a soft, textured fabric panel, which gives the inside of the crib a gentler look than bare timber or a solid board.

The slatted sides still keep the crib open and light, so a parent can see the baby from across the room. If you like the idea of a rounded crib, our oval cot bed is another oval design in our range.

Made from European beech

The frame is made from European beech, Fagus sylvatica, a dense, fine-grained hardwood with a pale, even color. Beech is a long-standing choice for children's furniture because it is hard-wearing and takes a smooth finish, and its light tone works equally well with the warm white panels and the stronger Cherry and Blueberry colors.

Safety details you can measure

The gaps between the vertical bars are less than 6 cm, to help prevent a baby's head from getting trapped. Bar spacing is one of the most important safety details on any crib, and it is one of the few that can be checked with a ruler, which is worth doing on any crib you buy.

The corners where the rail sections meet are rounded to R12, a radius chosen to prevent bumps and knocks. Together with the oval outline, it means the parts a baby is most likely to touch are smooth.

Three stages in one crib

The crib is designed to work in three forms: a bedside crib for 0 to 6 months, a toddler bed, and a kids bed for 1 to 3 years. The images show the same oval frame in each stage, first with a baby lying on the mattress beside a parent's bed, then with a smiling baby in the crib, and finally with a toddler climbing in on her own.

Each stage changes how the crib is used rather than how it looks, so the room does not need redoing as the child grows. When a child has outgrown the crib altogether, our toddler single bed range is the next step.

Beside the bed at night

In its first stage the crib sits right beside the parent's bed, as in the bedroom photo. The idea is practical: for night feeds, everything is within reach and there is no need to get up. Many families prefer this arrangement for the first months, which is why the crib's first stage is a bedside one.

As with any crib, follow the assembly and placement instructions supplied with it. For a design focused on the bedside stage, see our bedside cot bed.

Eight mattress heights

The mattress base can be set at eight levels, from 18.5 cm at level 1 to 40.9 cm at level 8. The figures are measured from the floor to the base board without the wheels fitted, and the levels are about 3.2 cm apart, so the base can be matched to the baby's stage and to mattresses of different thicknesses.

The connection is seamless, with no height difference between the sections, so the inside of the crib stays smooth at every level. A higher level makes it easy to lift a newborn, and a lower one suits a baby who is starting to pull up.

Casters that lock, stay quiet and look the part

The crib rolls on casters with a simple lock. Step on the lever to lock and step again to unlock, and a yellow indicator is visible when the caster is locked, so a parent can check the status at a glance

Noise from the wheels is listed at under 25 dB, so moving the crib across a room stays quiet

The caster itself is a rounded, ball-shaped design that has been honored with the iF Design Award 2026.

From the bedroom to the living room

On its casters the crib moves with the family. In the living room photo, a parent relaxes nearby while keeping an eye on the baby, with no distance apart.

At 70 cm wide, the crib passes through a standard 86 cm doorway, so moving from the bedroom to the living room meets no obstacles.
