Consider the Material: Natural Materials are More Environmentally Friendly, but Processing Techniques Matter
The base material of furniture is fundamental to its environmental friendliness, and different materials exhibit significant differences in environmental performance:
Solid Wood Furniture: Primarily made of natural wood, with fewer chemical additives during processing, it generally has better environmental performance. However, it's crucial to pay attention to the environmental friendliness of the coatings and adhesives used on the surface to avoid a situation of "environmentally friendly exterior, toxic interior."
Bamboo, Rattan, and other Natural Plant Materials: Short growth cycles and high renewability make them inherently environmentally friendly, suitable for making tables, chairs, bed frames, etc. However, if chemical adhesives or oil-based paints are used, harmful substances may still be released.
Engineered wood products (particleboard, MDF, eco-board, etc.) are mostly made from wood chips and fibers pressed together with adhesives. Their environmental friendliness is highly dependent on the adhesives used. Prioritize products using formaldehyde-free or low-formaldehyde adhesives such as MDI glue and soybean glue to significantly reduce the risk of formaldehyde release.
