Furniture Cleaning Methods
Feb 20, 2026
Different furniture materials require different cleaning methods. Incorrect cleaning methods not only fail to remove stains but may also cause permanent damage. Here are scientific cleaning and maintenance suggestions for common furniture materials:
Wooden Furniture
Daily Cleaning: Gently wipe along the wood grain with a slightly damp, soft cloth. Avoid using excessive water to prevent the wood from absorbing moisture, swelling, or cracking.
Stubborn Stains: Gently wipe with a small amount of diluted neutral detergent, then immediately remove any residue with a clean, damp cloth, and finally dry with a dry cloth.
Stain Removal Tips: Wiping with expired milk or tea water can effectively remove stains and increase shine; for scratches, apply cod liver oil, let it sit for a day, and then wipe to repair.
Maintenance Points: Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures. Regularly (quarterly) wax or use furniture care oil to keep the wood moisturized and extend its lifespan.
Leather Furniture (Genuine Leather Sofas)
Daily Care: First, remove dust with a dry cloth, then gently wipe with a wrung-out damp cloth. Do not use strong alkaline cleaners containing alcohol, dish soap, or other harsh detergents, as these may damage the leather's protective layer.
Stain Treatment:
Ordinary Stains: Wipe with a soft cloth dampened with diluted shower gel or hand soap, then wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap, and finally blot dry.
Oil-based Pen Marks: Use a special leather cleaner (similar to modeling clay) to remove. Avoid contact with alcohol for corrosion.
Oil Stains: Sprinkle with cornstarch to absorb the stains for several hours, then brush off.
Maintenance Recommendations: Regularly use leather conditioner or petroleum jelly to prevent cracking and fading; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or heat sources.
Fabric Furniture
Removable/Washable Types: Regularly remove the fabric covers and have them dry-cleaned to prevent shrinkage or fading from washing.
Non-Removable/Washable Types:
Daily Care: Clean dust and debris weekly with a low-powered vacuum cleaner, paying special attention to cleaning crevices.
For localized stains: Gently wipe with a neutral detergent or a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and warm water, then wipe away any residue with a clean, damp cloth.
