How Often Should Solid Wood Furniture Be Maintained?
Feb 13, 2026
There is no absolute standard for the maintenance frequency of solid wood furniture. The most suitable maintenance cycle is once every 6 to 12 months, but this needs to be adjusted flexibly according to the type of wood, surface finish, usage environment, and daily habits. For most families, annual maintenance is a basic requirement, while in areas with large climate fluctuations, every six months is recommended.
Maintenance Frequency Determined by Furniture Type and Finish
Wood Wax Oil Finish Furniture: Every 6-12 Months
Wood wax oil has strong penetration and nourishes the wood, but the protective layer is prone to degradation over time. Recommendation:
Perform light maintenance twice a year, in spring and autumn, especially before the rainy season or the start of the heating season in northern regions, to prevent swelling and cracking.
If used frequently (such as dining tables and coffee tables), the frequency can be shortened to once every 6 months.
Nitrocellulose Lacquer + Wood Wax Oil Double Finish: 2-3 Times a Year
This type of finish is more durable, but still requires regular maintenance. It is recommended to maintain the wood 2-3 times a year, especially during seasonal changes, to enhance its resistance to environmental changes.
Oil-based or water-based paint finishes: Frequent oiling is unnecessary; annual cleaning is sufficient. The paint surface has good sealing properties, primarily serving to prevent dust and scratches. Daily wiping with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient; waxing or oiling is not required.
Mahogany furniture: 2-3 times a year for the first two to three years, then once a year. Newly purchased mahogany furniture requires thorough penetration of the maintenance oil. Intensive maintenance is needed for the first two to three years; thereafter, once a year is sufficient to maintain its luster and stability.
Correct Maintenance Steps (using wood wax oil as an example)
Clean the surface: Wipe away dust with a dry, soft cloth along the wood grain, avoiding leaving moisture on the cloth.
Spot repair: For minor scratches or whitening, lightly sand with 600-grit sandpaper until smooth.
Apply wood wax oil: Take a small amount onto a soft cloth and apply evenly along the wood grain. Let it sit for 10-30 minutes to absorb.
Polishing finishing touches: Wipe away excess oil with a clean, dry cloth, and allow to dry completely for 24 hours before resuming use.
